The park lies in a rift valley that marks the Mid-Atlantic Ridge’s crest and the borderline between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland, lies nearby.
Thingvellir National Park was founded in 1930, marking the 1000th anniversary of the Althingi (the national parliament of Iceland). The park is classified as a World Heritage Site.
You can see the beautiful waterfall Öxárárfoss positioned inside Almannagjá in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
There are great walking paths, and the waterfall is within walking distance from the Service Center for Almannagjá.
The waterfall is an integral part of the overall natural wonders in the Þingvellir National Park.
